Something Good Is Happening – Part IV

In the aftermath of the Parkland, Florida shooting, art and music therapists came to the Coral Springs Museum of Art to create a safe, welcoming space for the community. Under the auspices of the museum’s Healing Through Art program, a steady stream of participants came for several days to create art, listen to music, cuddle with therapy dogs. All were comforted. Bree Gordon is one of the music therapists who responded without hesitation to share their healing kindness in action.

From Bree Gordon:

The Ministry of Art and Music for Parkland

“This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.”  —Leonard Bernstein

On behalf of the music therapy community of South Florida, we are so grateful to the American Art Therapy Association, our Creative Arts Therapy colleagues and the Coral Springs Museum of Art for organizing this volunteer-based program.  So many in our field were longing to contribute, comfort and connect in the wake of this tragedy and were appreciative for this provided opportunity.

Volunteers from West Palm Beach to Miami provided musical moments with themes of hope, strength, anger, sadness, support, healing and determination.  Songs from “Roar” to “Hallelujah” to “Imagine” were met with joined voices, a few tears and shared stories.

I am so proud be to a member of this community of caring, creative and giving professionals.
