Mother’s Day is a big deal

Courage. Peace. Unity. Harmony. Above all…and against all odds of success.

There have been many compelling motives reflected in the numerous efforts to commemorate how mothers have influenced society for good purpose. Beginning 150 years ago women’s groups have organized to stand up to whatever is harmful to society, under different banners and in multiple locations, especially during tumultuous times.

Mother’s Day Work Clubs came together during the American Civil War to improve sanitation and health for both Union and Confederate encampments. After the war, a Mother’s Friendship Day was organized each year to reunite families divided during the war. Subsequently, there were Mother’s Day for Peace observations to encourage mothers around the world to work for global peace. Makes total sense to Moms: If you stop your sons, who will fight the wars?

It’s awesome to consider how influential these 19th century women leaders believed Mothers of the World could actually be!

Maybe it is because the real power is in what impels the actions: the motivation, the spiritual values that these mothers embodied. Care for sons, fathers and brothers emboldened women to go to tents of typhoid outbreaks, love of family encouraged mothers to cross bitter divides to restore broken relationships, and love of humanity compelled women to stand up to mighty war machines.

Wow. When you look at Mother’s Day from a spiritual perspective, then you see the gift of courage and humanity for good purpose the Mothers of the World have given all of us. Thank you, Moms!

The Power of Women continues to press for justice and guide humanity towards greater peace for all. Thank you!
