December: Tangible Hope

Notice how powerful a tiny beam of light is in a dark room? Doesn’t matter how small or weak, that pinpoint of light throws a radiance…it can’t be hidden, it always has an effect. Not coincidentally, the darker the room, the stronger that tiny light appears to be. It magnifies! That is the hope that can lead the way in the gloom.

In this darkest of winter months (in the northern hemisphere, the shortest daylight of the year!) December seems like a good month to focus on tangible hope. Anne Lamott’s description of hope unites it with doing the right thing. Sounds right. Hope, then, isn’t passive. Hope is a power, an active, tangible and principled force for good work.

Vaclav Havel, first President of the Czech Republic, experienced hope similarly, “[It is] the certainty that something makes sense, regardless of how it turns out.”

So here’s the big ah-HA: While the outcome of hope cannot be outlined, it is tangible good… it will light and lead to the right thing to do.
