Words matter. Truth matters most of all.
Now we know for sure. Words matter. Lies matter worst of all. Misinformation (inaccurate), disinformation (deceptive), false perceptions, intentional lies not only confuse and mess with your thoughts, they can impel harmful acts. How to discern between the false information and the true facts? It isn’t enough to “trust a single source” – each individual is responsible for their own thoughts. And, it is painfully clear by now, responsible for their own fact-checking.
This report from the Christian Science Monitor shares four simple tips on how you can discern the facts and share information that builds bridges, not walls.
Why sharing truth matters: Be my neighbor.
Here’s a fact: Lies inflame the worst instincts – to hate and harm your neighbors. The search for truth – just the simple desire to get the facts – encourages qualities of listening, respect, humility and empathy for everyone in your community, even so-called enemies. Mr. Rogers asked unconditionally, “Will you be my neighbor?” Seeking and sharing truth will help us all be neighbors.
